Antitox pH 7.2 (for freshwater) and pH 8.3 (for marine systems) are specially formulated Tris pH buffers used specifically for stabilizing the pH of fish culture water. The use of AntiTox can make a huge improvement to the condition of the fish during transportation, by reducing stress from CO2 respiration.

Many chemical or drug treatments can also make the water acidic or alkaline, the pH buffer insures that the pH remains stable and thereby reduces the stress to which the fish are exposed during treatment.

Antitox should be used at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2 grams per litre of water.   The pH buffers are calibrated at a temperature of 25 deg C.   At lower temperatures the pH will be slightly more alkaline.

Antitox Marine gives a pH of 8.3 at 25 deg C, and 8.5 to 8.7 at 5 deg C.   The tendency is for the water to become more acidic  due to the respiration of the fish, so having the water slightly more alkaline should result in the average pH average being equal to pH 8.3 at a temperature of 10 to 15 deg C by the end of the journey.  

The pH of the fish transportation water with AntiTox  should be checked to confirm that the pH is okay before introducing the fish.  You should also check the pH after the journey as this information will allow you to more accurate calculate the precise amount of AntiTox required. The variables are

  1. water quality
  2. fish size and species
  3. stocking density
  4. temperature
  5. transportation tank or technique
  6. duration of journey

In some cases if possible it would be useful to measure the pH during the journey.  For most marine fish the critical pH is 7.8,  do not allow the pH to fall below this value.  Make up a solution of Antitox and if you detect a low pH or are concerned that the pH may fall below pH7.8 then more of the product could be added as a dilute solution.

AntiTox is used extensively fore transportation of Marine tropical fish as well as cold water species such as turbot, cod and halibut.
